  Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a Duffy the right boat for?
Duffy owners are a very diverse group. Electric boats provide an alternative in locations where gas or diesel powered boats are restricted or banned or on speed controlled bodies of water. The ease of operation, the minimal maintenance required and the quiet, relaxed experience with electric propulsion attract many boaters. And customers from around the world are drawn to the classic lines and well designed interiors of Duffy Boats, which have been built since 1970. In a nutshell, these boats are built for the way people “really” navigate the waters... comfortable cruising!

How long will a Duffy cruise?
Our standard battery configuration provides up to six hours of cruising on a full charge. An optional extra battery pack will double your cruising time. Our boats come equipped with an energy gauge which will give you real time information on energy usage and running time remaining. This exclusive Duffy feature keeps the skipper informed and eliminates any concern about running out of power.

How long does it take to recharge my Duffy?
Overnight. Charging is completely automatic, and simply requires plugging the power cord into a standard 110 volt household AC outlet on shore and into our twist-lock inlet located inside the boat. Once the batteries are fully charged, the onboard “Smart Charger” will shut off automatically.

How much does it cost to charge my Duffy?
Based on an average kWh rate of $.12, we estimate an average cost of less than $1.00 to recharge the battery pack.

What is the lifetime of the battery pack?
With proper care, a Duffy battery pack can provide 5-7 years of service before replacement.

How does Duffy power compare to trolling motor power?
Duffy drive systems are designed to be primary power systems, developing from 140 lbs. to 220 lbs. of static thrust. Trolling motors are designed for intermittent duty, developing about 90 lbs. of static thrust. The Advanced DC motor in a Duffy develops tremendous torque and is equivalent to about a 10 hp gas motor. Duffy boats cruise at between 4.5 and 6.5 knots.

How does a Duffy handle salt water, wind and current?
Duffys were originally designed, tested and marketed in salt water harbors off the Pacific Ocean. All of our components are selected to withstand the harsh marine environment. All Duffys are powered with the highest rated 36 volt or 48 volt “Power Plus” electric motors as standard equipment. This allows them to handle most wind and current conditions impeccably. Every precaution is taken to isolate our electric systems from moisture, which gives our customers low maintenance and years of trouble free boating.

What kind of warranty is provided with my Duffy?
Duffy is the only electric boat builder to warranty its motors, controllers (the brains of the system) and propellers for LIFE! The Trojan deep cycle marine batteries are warranted for three years. All other original equipment is covered for one year.

Can I custom order my Duffy?
Certainly! You are the customer and we are committed to providing the boat you desire. We offer a wide range of colors in hulls, deck/liners and fabrics, optional features, material upgrades and power systems so you can personalize your Duffy.
